Link Building with Blog Comments
August 20, 2008 | Leave a Comment
A powerful way to quickly build inbound links to your website is to comment on other peoples relevant blog’s with interesting and useful commentary. However due to spamdexing or comment spam many of the blog’s and guestbook’s out there today have introduced the use of the no follow (rel=”nofollow”) tag.
While this doesn’t always prevent me from commenting on topics that I find interesting or relevant to the content of my website it does help to regularly post to blog’s that not only do not have a nofollow tag but also have some page rank.
There is a free tool called Comment Kahuna that simplifies a lot of the process and makes building links and traffic that much simpler. It will automatically scan for blog posts on sites that do not use the nofollow tag and sort the results by the blog’s page rank.
Use of the tool on a regular basis can generate a lot of traffic, not only from the blog itself but your rise in rankings for you keywords due to the extra inbound links. You’ll be able to find high authority niche blog’s and get free backlinks.
Finding relevant blogs to comment on however is just the first part of building quality backlinks. Finding something interesting and useful to say is also part of the process.
This is where it helps that you have built your website around a topic or subject that you find interesting. Read through the post, even if its just a speed reading quick scan and get the overall feel for the blogger’s perspective on the subject. If you have any familiarity with the subject matter you should be able to quickly come up with a two or three sentence response.
If you aren’t really familiar with the subject matter it is possible to copy a sentence from within the blog post, paste it into the comment box and reword it as if you are agreeing with whatever was being discussed.
That is not a technique that I use often as I tend to build websites around topics that I would want to read blog posts about and I recommend to clients that they do the same.
While writing an interesting comment is important as that is what determines whether or not your comment actually gets published upon review, your name is also very important as this is going to be your anchor text for the link back to your website.
Many people make the mistake of actually typing in their real name in this field. This is where the keywords should go that you want your website to rank highly for as that is how the search engines will interpret the link.
Depending on a blog’s page rank your link can be indexed quickly and you will soon see the power of building backlinks through commenting on relevant blog posts.

Drop Shipping to Supply the Demand You Create
August 20, 2008 | Leave a Comment
The online selling opportunities abound on the Internet, and it doesn’t matter if you’re developing your own eCommerce site or working through an online auction, drop shipping can help.
Drop shipping is the supply chain management model that will allow you to sell online and create a professional retail reputation. It’s a simple process, and the low cost entry point means that almost anyone can get involved, and almost anyone can begin to make money online.
Drop shipping is a popular option for businesses both large and small - even single-person small. The benefits to the business are such that, as a model for efficiency, it really shouldn’t be ignored.
It all begins with research. If you’re going to create the sort of demand that will generate the traffic and the revenue you need to succeed, you will need to know a lot of specific details about the industry you are targeted, the products you are selling, and the competition you’ll be facing. Only with this knowledge as your foundation will you be able to leverage the opportunities on the Internet.
The next phase of drop shipping is to list and promote your item. This can take the form of search engine optimization for individual websites, or building your reputation on an online auction.
Search engine optimization can take a long time to properly implement, but as you slowly climb the search engine ranks the interest in your site will also begin to grow and more and more traffic will turn to you for that product. You will be the site positioned to take advantage of the demand that centers on your product.
Reputation management is very important for online auction sites because there are likely a number of sellers who are offering the same products that you do. The only way a buyer will know that they should choose you over them is by having a history of professional and reliable transactions. Drop shipping is the process that allows you to do this.
So how is it that most companies can’t keep their supply and demand balanced for maximum profit? It’s due to the traditional method of supply chain management. Most traditional retailers have to purchase their inventory up-front, store it, and promote it. When this happens they are often caught in the unfortunate and ironic position of promoting it so well that the stocks they have are not enough to cover the demand that they’ve generated.
This has a doubly negative effect in that once you haven’t been able to meet the demand the first time, customers will be quick to decide that that is your modus operandi and then never come back.
Drop shipping, however, eliminates this risk. You don’t have to store any of the products yourself, so, technically speaking, you’ll never run out. All of your products are stored at, and shipped from, the supplier or manufacturer. You won’t have to deal with balancing your inventory. You list the items that are available and forget (for the moment at least) the items that are not.
Conversely, you also don’t have to worry about getting stuck with a warehouse or stockroom full of unmovable or unpopular products. Because of this risk, many businesses hesitate to order sufficient inventory, and that can also result in an inability to fill demand.
Online selling works best when you can create and sustain a balanced supply and demand. Drop shipping gives you the chance to get involved with the online market place and look like a professional while you do it.

Site Optimization with Great Keyword
August 20, 2008 | Leave a Comment
You have created a brand new, hot looking website that without a doubt will be placed ahead of your competitors in the Search engines. Surely with all the work, time, and effort you expended creating your site, it will be up there in the ranks! Then you find out that you don’t even have a page r!nk( and you can’t find your site by doing a search. One of the reasons may be that you have not opthmizeD your site using keywords. You wonder why and how this could be when you thought you used the best keywords possible, but what you thought was best were actually the most competitive keywords. In this case, no matter how great your site, you would never get ahead of your competitors.
One way to get ahead is by doing your keyword research with a keyword research tool that tells you a term’s popularity. This is a step that simply cannot be missed when trying to optimize your site. When searching for keywords, you do not want to use highly competitive terms. What I mean by this is that you don’t want the word to come up with several million hits, even if this initially sounds like it would be a good term to use. On my own website, “home business” brings up 4,100,000,000 hits, so I would not want use this term to try and drive traffic to my site! I want to start with the less popular terms until I have a good page rank, and then I can think about using the more competitive terms later on. Using our keyword tool, we would choose a less popular term, and then do a Google search to find out just how competitive that term is.
A little trick you can use to beat the competition is to notice what sites come up in your Google search for your particular, less popular keyword. If the site’s URL contains a sub-page, and that page ranks well in Google, then you can get ahead of that site by using the same keyword, only in your domain, not on another page of your site as in the above example, “/example.htm”. You also want to check that top-ranking site’s page rank using the Google page rank toolbar. If the site achieved a top ranking in the search engines, but only has a page rank of 3 out of 10, then you know it will be fairly easy to get the same page rank, or better.
Next, you want to look at that top-ranking site’s HTML code by clicking View/Source in your browser. Even if you don’t know much about HTML, it pays to learn a little bit, and it is not as hard as it looks. If you compare an actual web page to the source code for that page, you will start to see patterns that make sense to you. Start by studying your own source code, and then the source code of other sites will look familiar to you. The things to watch out for when looking at other people’s source code is to notice whether or not they use H1, header tags. Some sites do not, and if you’re top-ranking site does not use a header tag, then you can one-up them by using a header tag on your site containing the right keywords, and make sure the keywords appear at both the start and end of your copy. Also notice if the site uses a title tag with the keywords within the title tag. If they do use title tags, they will be ranked higher in the search engines for that keyword. If they don’t use title tags, then you should use title tags to get ahead. If the other site has bolded, italicized, or underlined keywords, they will rank higher. If not, you could get ahead by doing that on your site. You want to check to see if they use certain images on their site based on keywords. If they don’t, you should be using images and call the file the name of the specific keyword you want to use.
It’s a good idea to get into the habit of doing keyword research and creating a keyword file that you can add to on a regular basis. This file should consist of popular, but less searched keywords that can outrank your competitors. The bigger the list, the better off you are. This will help you get traffic to your site using keywords that your competitors have not thought of using yet. As troublesome as it may sound to do keyword research, and view the HTML code of your competitors, your site’s position in the search engines will definitely improve quickly if you follow the steps above!
Then you find out that you don’t even have a page rank, and you can’t find your site by doing a search. One of the reasons may be that you have not optimized your site using keywords.

Cash and Pay-Per-Click Programs
August 19, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Millions are paying to get a ride on the Information Super Highway everyday. Now, it is widely known that the Internet is an accessible resource of many income-generating activities. Whether you belong to a private sales company or you are just interested in internet marketing, PPC affiliate programs can be a powerful venue to make money from the Internet. A partnership with an affiliate merchant is a win-win situation for the merchant and the affiliate: sales are soaring because of exposure and traffic while the affiliate is earning good cash.
To make things much simpler: the affiliate merchant provides a strip of advertisement and pays you when someone clicks on the ad’s link. You can get a commission of $0.10 to $0.30 for every click, but it sometimes it can go higher depending on your merchant affiliate. Sometimes, merchants require a quota ($1.4 for every 1000 clicks). Plus, you can get discounts from your merchant affiliates if you happen to like their products too. You can just kick back and relax while your website is generating cash. Sounds easy, doesn’t it?
What is PCC Affiliate Program?
PPC means pay-per-click, wherein you get in partnership with an affiliate company that literally pays you for every click. There are actually two types of PCC affiliate programs – those who pay a commission based on the number of clicks and the other based on the sales. The pay-per-click scheme is much more popular than pay-per-lead because the affiliate gets paid by just clicking the ad, regardless of whether the visitor buys from the affiliate merchant or not. Plus the chances of a visitor purchasing something from the affiliate merchant are not really that high.
In choosing an affiliate program, read the fine print carefully – some pay-per-click programs get the ratio of the number of people who went to your site and the actual people who clicked on the ad. If you have a heavily targeted website, this can hurt your earnings.
How do I start?
Of course, you need to have a website. Depending on your target audience, choose the best affiliate merchant that is most related to your topic. For example, your website is about Carpentry then you can search for affiliate programs that sell tools used in carpentry.
However, if you don’t have a website, that’s not a problem. You can put up a content site about absolutely anything under the sun like ‘Taking Care of Dogs’ or ‘Decorating your own Home.’ But wait, its not over yet. We are faced by a dilemma – on how to increase traffic! You first need to get internet surfers to see your website, then the ad.
How do I increase my traffic?
First, design your website in such a way that it will attract internet users. A user-friendly site is always recommended so that the customers will know which one to click. Take into consideration the look and feel of the advertisement. If it doesn’t look professional, most likely, users will just ignore it. Place the ad on a strategic location – one where users can see it clearly. Visibility of the ad is always important.
Another way is to post a link to your website in forums, web communities, ezine articles or bulletin boards. However, this method requires a lot of effort – that defeats your purpose of getting easy money in the first place! The key is to do something once and forget about it. It’s like putting your business on autopilot. To maintain you pay-per-click business, be sure to track down site activity, so you are updated on how much money you are making.
Can I make more money?
If you think you can go to the next level, you can try a two-tier affiliate program. This gives you the power to recruit affiliates. Other than the money you get from your website’s clicks, you will also get a percentage of what your affiliate generates. Some companies give 30% to a soaring 50% commission on all referral sales.
Remember, you should be able to manage and monitor your affiliate program. If you can recruit more affiliates, then you can get paid more without even moving a finger! Choose affiliates that can most likely attract more internet users and bring more traffic. You just have to know the right people.

Some serious ‘messing’ with the display format of my ads
August 17, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Does it even exist? It could be I have evidence.
A few months ago I saw a spike in traffic to a site of mine.
This site has real-time visitor stats available including the IP origin of all visitors on the site. It’s easy to lookup the IP and see where the traffic originated. When I did this I discovered that the traffic was coming from Google Inc. At one point over a few days I had 20 visitors together on the site all from Google HQ.
This continued over a few weeks, although the number on site from Google simultaneously never matched the 20 again, I witnessed a steady hit rate throughout each day, some days reaching 10 or so Google HQ visitors at one time. But mostly they would pop up in 2’s and 3’s.
I still get these visitors… checking the site now and there is at least one Google employee on the site, there may be more. I recognize this one IP at least without checking.
It became obvious that my site was being watched and monitored by Google staff. I said hello via the sites broadcast system once or twice just for the fun of it.
Anyway, again a few months ago a trend began which involved placing images near your Adsense ads to catch the visitors’ eye, in the hope that they would then read the ads nearby and click through. I believe I was one of the first to have these images up and running and this could be what got me spotted by Google.
The result of all this was two fold.
First of all, Google has been doing some serious ‘messing’ with the display format of my ads. With a few Adsense blocks on a page I find more often than not many are disabled in favor of the leaderboard only across the top of the pages. But then much of the time the leaderboard will display just 1 or 2 Adsense ads rather than the usual 4.
This is fine; they’re optimizing my ads for better CTR(Click Through Rate), great. But that’s not all they’re doing, they’re tweaking the display of my ads in an annoying way. Every single Adsense ad has a thin black border around it. This is not configurable in the code at my end but something that Google have added at their end.
This wouldn’t be so bad but for the Adsense ads that they don’t display still having this thin black border. Essentially I finish up with pages that have big black squares or rectangles of empty space where the Adsense ads should be. Which is obviously not good for the look of the site especially if this is on an empty square ad in the middle of the page copy?
I’ve been watching this happen now for around 6 weeks.
The other, much better, upshot of all this is that following the Jagger update Google have really got their teeth into this site and started to throw lots of traffic at it from across their world network. I see visitors from Google searches in India, Norway, Germany, Auz, Arabia etc. Which is great? The monitoring has definitely had a positive effect.
My conclusion is that I popped up on the Google radar; they monitored me, and continue to, but decided that the site wasn’t breaking any TOS and more importantly it wasn’t a spam site.
I hope to see them drop those black borders soon, surely it can’t be helping the CTR on the Adsense?

10 Simple Strategies to Promote Your Site
August 17, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Traffic is the only way to promote your website. Thus, to create more traffic into your website, a high ranking among the search results by search engine is critical. The more inward links your website gets, the higher your website ranking is. This is particularly important because if a well-known website links to your website, your website are more likely to increase in the number of visitors and ranking by search engines.
There are some important websites that should link to your website as these are considered trustworthy by search engines:
• Websites such as Microsoft, Amazon or BBC
• Directories such as the Open Directory Project
• Blogger directories such as Bloglines.com
• Educational websites especially from top educational universities
• Free websites
• Websites with high page rank from search engines
The strategies to make the important websites to link to your website are:
• Using link building services either by using software or paying others to start a campaign to build links
• Paying for links on a directory or from websites with high page rank, but this method is very risky as your website can be banned from search engines
• Writing informative articles for other websites and including the link back to your own website
• Swapping links with other websites. This is the least working strategy for large scale websites.
The links to your website are not equal as there are a few factors that determine the value of a link. The factors are strength, relevance, anchor text and position of the website. As mentioned earlier, the strength of a link is due to the ranking of a website by search engines.
The relevance means that if the content of the website linking to you is highly relevant to your website, your page rank will increase if the website has a high ranking. If the website linking to you is one of the websites in the top lists of search results, your website will gain more importance. Anchor text is important when you want to link your website to other websites mainly to provide more information on a particular topic.
A small number of high-quality links is much better than a large number of links that are not getting your website anywhere. Search and ask around for the top websites that you should put the links. You can start the ball rolling by link to other websites, in particularly the high-quality websites and links from these websites are worth more than an average website.

How to Run a Successful Article Directory
August 17, 2008 | Leave a Comment
An article directory is like an other website. It serves a specific function, and it’s the owner’s responsibility to figure out a plan to make it work. An article directory that’s not functioning correctly may have a home page like a ghost town. Few visitors, few articles, very few activities, with only a handful of authors.
I can tell whether an article directory can be around in the long run or not just be looking at the home page. In the course of my business, I visit hundreds of article directories and after some time, some patterns are emerging. Everyone can run an article directory. Use a free script like articledashboard, host it on a shared hosting account, and yet another article directory is born. But to make the directory into a successful one takes time and effort.
First, understand the audience that you’ll be dealing with if you’re going to own an article directory. There are basically two groups: the readers, and the publishers. Without content, there wouldn’t be readers, so start promoting your new directory by getting authors to submit content. That’s a challenge if the site is new because publishers want traffic when they submit articles, and a new site has no traffic. So why would they want to submit?
If you understand that, you know what you must do. First and foremost, promote your own article directory heavily. Do a lot of article marketing to get the traffic in. Target the publishers in the initial stages. If they read an article written by you, chances are, they already know that you’re actively promoting the directory and will be more likely to submit articles.
Once you have people coming to your site to submit articles, treat them like VIPs! Approve their articles if they meet your guidelines as quickly as you can to show that the site is active. Make sure that the articles meet your quality guidelines. Don’t fall into the trap of accepting poorly written articles just because the site is new. If you do that, you’ll face more problems down the road.
And your problems will be from the readers who come to your site for the articles. They make a search in the search engines, find the title interesting and click through to your site, only to be disappointed with a poorly written article. Chances are, you’ve lost that visitor forever because it’s going to be hard trying to get the visitor to come back due to the first poor experience.
Some visitors are webmasters or publishers looking for reprint content. If your site offers poor quality content, they’ll move on and not reprint the content from your site. This, again, will affect your site adversely.
Finally, make sure that your article directory has RSS feeds that are well syndicated. This means that any author who has an accepted article will have his or her article syndicated to many other websites. More exposure will make the authors very happy, and they’ll come back again and again to submit more quality articles. Your article directory is on a roll!
That’s how you can build a successful article directory. Once you have done a good job, how you want to monetize the traffic is up to you.
Darren Chow is a full time article marketer. His latest project is a Article Distribution Service where bloggers can promote their own blogs by submitting articles. The Article Submission Services are at affordable rates to help bloggers succeed.
