Speech Mastery: Beyond the Basic Informative Speech

Can you improve your public speaking by going beyond the basic informative speech?
Anyone who has given a public speech knows about creating an introduction, body and conclusion. This is the basic public speech writing requirement.
However, is it possible you can advance as a speaker, improve yourself and give even more to your audience? Have you stretched beyond your comfort level to grow in your talent and skills?
Considering just two aspects of informative speech writing can help you improve your public speaking. These are the foundation of your speech and the materials you build your speech out of.
The Informative Speech Foundation
Start with a foundation. No, not an outline of how you will prepare your speech. A foundation that requires some digging. A foundation that lays the basis for what you will say.
Just as foundation requirements of a building are dependent on the ground to be built upon and the type of building, how best to build your speech depends on the audience.
Take the time to learn about your audience. Speak to meet their needs.
What are the demographics?
What are the learning styles?
What are the educational backgrounds?
What kinds of things make them loose sleep at night?
Digging to find out these aspects of your audience will help you create a foundation on which to better build a talk on.
In addition to digging and building a foundation, the materials used in building a talk can enhance your public speaking.
The Building Materials of Your Talk
With the foundation work in place, next consider the materials you will build your speech out of.
What are the mental triggers?
What do you know about the audience mind?
What kind of questions will best arouse interest in the introduction?
Experienced speakers know that the introduction needs to arouse interest. Tapping into the power of emotional triggers, start with a story, illustration or question.
If you use a question, use the problem-then-solution format.
For instance, “ Are you failing to build rapport with your audience because you do not know how the audience’s mind works?”
Whatever thread you start in the introduction, it needs to follow through the body to the conclusion.
With a foundation to build on and superior materials to build with, you are ready to start building a speech to wow the audience.
Asking these questions and using psychological techniques along with speech skills will exponentially improve your rapport with your audience.
Consider an example of how you can improve your speaking by an example of one change in the way you think. In this case, it is an emotional need.
An Example
Suppose you are speaking to a group of real estate professionals and in a survey you find that 72% have children and or grand children. If the market is down what will be one of the most important things on their mind? How they will provide for their families.
Is your goal to educate them on how to improve chances of making sales in a down market?
Making sales may not be the thing that keeps them up at night.
If, instead you appeal to the emotional triggers, you will improve your ability to reach your audience. In a down market little can be done to sell more that what buyers want to buy. However, surviving in a down market would be information that could help the real estate agents.
This change can open a world of possibilities for the creation of your talk.
So when possible, speak to satisfy the emotional need.
Grow as a Speaker
These two aspects of speech writing or creation can help you grow as a public speaker.
Learn how to start digging to find out more about your audience. Start learning the psychological tactics to make your speech reach the audience mind.
These suggestions work because they tap into the way our brains are hard wired. So give a better speech by digging and creating a better foundation and using better materials.

5 Considerations Before You Write Your Brochure

Brochures are a great way to get your detailed product info to customers or as a way to generate sales leads. Brochures can work alone or they can support other sales and marketing materials.
Before you even start writing your brochure or even think about the brochure printing process, though, there are a few considerations to think about. Check out the following essentials you need to iron out before you even start writing.
Your brochure’s function
You need to decide where your brochure will enter in the selling process. The brochure’s place in the process will help you know what kind of copy to write in your brochure.
Your brochure could be used in the following spots in the selling process:
• Leave-Behind: This has more detailed info for customers after you have left them in a sales meeting.
• Point-of-Sale: This is the brochure by the cashier at banks or in line at the supermarket.
• Direct Mail: Supports your other direct mail pieces, like the sales letter.
• Response: A response brochure is one you send to someone after they have asked about your product. It is a follow up.
If your brochure will be used alone as in a leave-behind, you will need to fill it with lots of info. If your brochure is used as part of your direct mail campaign with other marketing materials, you will need to make sure it doesn’t contain repetitive info from the other marketing pieces.
Your brochure’s focus
Will you have one brochure for each product or will one brochure cover all your products? If you are writing to talk about how all of your products have a common element (like quality craftsmanship), you need to write differently than if you are just talking about one product.
Your audience
You need to know who will be reading your brochure so you know whose questions you will be answering in the brochure. If your brochure is going to potential customers who do not know much about your product, you need much more background info than for a brochure going to a loyal customer.
Decide how you will organize your info
Your brochure should answer your audience’s questions in the order they would ask them. Think of your brochure as a book with a beginning, middle and end. Most people will look at the front, then the back and then flip through the middle panels to see if the brochure contains info they need to read.
Make sure you present your info in a logical order so that it is helpful to the reader and not confusing. People will be more apt to buy from you if you provide a helpful brochure rather than one that left them scratching their heads from confusion.
Outline what topics need to be covered
Brochures are great for providing detailed info, but do not bog them down with too much info. Cramming each panel full of text will leave the customer intimidated and he or she will stop reading. Make sure you get the info you want the customer to have in the brochure and leave any extras for a leave-behind, detailed brochure or for another marketing piece.

Writing can be a scary thing in the world of advertising. What you write down cannot ever be taken back. Your writing will be spread around for hundreds or thousands of people to see and if you did not do something right you might be in a position of bringing an advertisement down.
Some applications of color printing have more of a focus on writing than others, such as newsletter printing and the color brochure. Booklet printing is going to probably be one of the biggest writing heavy styles of marketing you are likely to see, and is not always for everyone if your strength in the field of writing is a little weak.
But there are ways to improve your skill, and certain things to be aware of and focus on.
First you have to be sure about the kind of language you are using. A lot of the time when writing different marketing material, especially longer styles, you might be inclined to start using a vocabulary that other people who are not in your industry will not share.
This is often a major issue with a lot of booklets when a person wrote it filled with technical jargon that the average person does not know or care about. And this applies to more than just words dealing with your industry. You do not want to go through the thesaurus finding the most obscure words possible in an effort to wow your audience. Most just would not read it.
You also want to keep most sentences rather short and too the point. The longer your sentences get the harder it will be for people to know what you are talking about.
Consider as well if what you are writing is more a cliché than an interesting phrase. A lot of people who are not as well acquainted with writing might turn to the well-known styles or sayings to make it look like they know more about writing than they do. All this will accomplish is the exact opposite.
If you are going to be doing a lot of writing it is also good to establish your own style. Try to write as naturally as you can and do not force yourself to sound like someone you are not, because odds are good the person reading will be able to tell that you are not being yourself. A lot can come through in your writing.
Once your writing is finished you need to be sure to both proofread and get someone else to proofread as well. Many people think that they can handle all the editing themselves, but all that will do is lead to missed mistakes.
Writing is not such a difficult thing if you keep yourself focused. Good writing is also something that can have a big impact on sales. A well-written newsletter can do wonders to boost your image. Enough practice and enough knowledge of the rules will help to ensure you will not have any troubles when the time comes for you to write something.

How to Run a Successful Article Directory

An article directory is like an other website. It serves a specific function, and it’s the owner’s responsibility to figure out a plan to make it work. An article directory that’s not functioning correctly may have a home page like a ghost town. Few visitors, few articles, very few activities, with only a handful of authors.
I can tell whether an article directory can be around in the long run or not just be looking at the home page. In the course of my business, I visit hundreds of article directories and after some time, some patterns are emerging. Everyone can run an article directory. Use a free script like articledashboard, host it on a shared hosting account, and yet another article directory is born. But to make the directory into a successful one takes time and effort.
First, understand the audience that you’ll be dealing with if you’re going to own an article directory. There are basically two groups: the readers, and the publishers. Without content, there wouldn’t be readers, so start promoting your new directory by getting authors to submit content. That’s a challenge if the site is new because publishers want traffic when they submit articles, and a new site has no traffic. So why would they want to submit?
If you understand that, you know what you must do. First and foremost, promote your own article directory heavily. Do a lot of article marketing to get the traffic in. Target the publishers in the initial stages. If they read an article written by you, chances are, they already know that you’re actively promoting the directory and will be more likely to submit articles.
Once you have people coming to your site to submit articles, treat them like VIPs! Approve their articles if they meet your guidelines as quickly as you can to show that the site is active. Make sure that the articles meet your quality guidelines. Don’t fall into the trap of accepting poorly written articles just because the site is new. If you do that, you’ll face more problems down the road.
And your problems will be from the readers who come to your site for the articles. They make a search in the search engines, find the title interesting and click through to your site, only to be disappointed with a poorly written article. Chances are, you’ve lost that visitor forever because it’s going to be hard trying to get the visitor to come back due to the first poor experience.
Some visitors are webmasters or publishers looking for reprint content. If your site offers poor quality content, they’ll move on and not reprint the content from your site. This, again, will affect your site adversely.
Finally, make sure that your article directory has RSS feeds that are well syndicated. This means that any author who has an accepted article will have his or her article syndicated to many other websites. More exposure will make the authors very happy, and they’ll come back again and again to submit more quality articles. Your article directory is on a roll!
That’s how you can build a successful article directory. Once you have done a good job, how you want to monetize the traffic is up to you.

The Elusive Lead

Developing those first few leads for any business can be a trying task, and can make the differences between a successful business and an out-of-business.
So what can you do to develop your leads?
Direct mailing, sometimes known as postcard mailing, is a great way to get your leads going, but only if you know exactly what goes into setting up an effective direct mailing operation.
The first thing you need to do is figure out exactly who you are going to be targeting. Each demographic will have a unique view and style that appeals to them the most. No single kind of advertisement will work for all of them. You do not want to be in a position of spending money on color printing only to realize you picked a style your customers do not have any interest in.
Find out as much as you can about them, including their interests, hobbies, preferences, and the things they look for most in a business. You cannot tailor a message towards a person if you do not know anything about them first.
The more specific your target group is the easier it will be to do this. For those targeting a niche market you will have the easiest time figuring out exactly how to fit your message to your audience, but no matter who you are looking to generate business with, you need to do your research.
